1008 cold-rolled steel is a low-carbon steel, 0.10% carbon maximum, sold as annealed sheet and coil to ASTM A1008. It is the default material for stampings and deep drawn parts because it forms well, welds easily and costs little. Typical yield strength is 20–40 ksi (140–275 MPa). It rusts bare, so plan on zinc plating, e-coat or powder coat.

Short- to medium-run stampings: brackets, clips, shields, and plates cut and formed from sheet or coil in a press.

One-piece cups, cans, shells, and housings drawn from flat blanks, with depth that can exceed the diameter.

Laser-cut, punched, bent, and welded sheet metal enclosures, brackets, and chassis with no hard tooling.

Compression, extension, and torsion springs, wire forms, and fourslide clips made from round wire and flat strip.

Parts made by vetted overseas manufacturers, with landed-cost analysis, quality control, and logistics managed.

Under ASTM A1008, CS (commercial steel) suits bending and moderate forming. DS (drawing steel) has tighter chemistry and lower yield for deeper draws. DDS and EDDS grades go further for severe draws. Give the stamper the draw depth and they will pick the grade.
Cold-rolled holds tighter thickness tolerance, has a smooth scale-free surface and forms more consistently, so it is the choice for visible or precise parts. Hot-rolled pickled and oiled sheet (ASTM A1011 HRPO) costs less for thicker, non-cosmetic parts.
Not by quench and temper; it has too little carbon. Carburizing or carbonitriding adds a hard case of about 0.003–0.020 in (0.08–0.5 mm) for wear parts. For a through-hardened stamping, use 1050, 1075 or 1095 spring steel strip.
Zinc plating for small parts in indoor or mild service, e-coat for uniform protection on complex shapes, and powder coat for color and outdoor durability. Zinc-nickel is the upgrade when parts need several hundred hours of salt spray.
