Titanium Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V, is an alpha-beta titanium alloy with 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium and the most used titanium alloy. Annealed, it runs about 138 ksi (950 MPa) tensile at 0.160 lb/in³ (4.43 g/cm³), one of the best strength-to-weight ratios of any engineering metal. It resists seawater and body fluids. It is expensive and slow to machine.

Cost, finishes and design rules for each process in this material.

CNC milling, turning, and production sawing from bar, plate, castings, and forgings, from prototype to production.

Turned pins, fittings, shafts, and bushings made from bar stock on multi-spindle and Swiss screw machines at volume.

Closed-die and open-die forgings in carbon, alloy, and stainless steel and aluminum, with grain flow for strength.

SLS, MJF, SLA, FDM, and metal printing for prototypes, fixtures, and low-volume production parts.
A representative part, cnc machining. Raw material at about $45.00/kg is one line of it; process time and tooling usually matter more.

Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium with about 50 ksi (345 MPa) minimum tensile, better formability and slightly better corrosion resistance. Grade 5 is nearly three times as strong. Use Grade 2 for formed sheet and chemical service, Grade 5 for structural and machined parts.
No. Ti-6Al-4V is only weakly paramagnetic, effectively non-magnetic, which suits medical and instrument applications.
Low thermal conductivity (6.7 W/m·K) keeps heat at the cutting edge, and the alloy work-hardens and reacts with tool materials. Cutting speeds run about a quarter of those for free-machining steel, and tools wear faster. Expect machining cost several times an equivalent aluminum part.
Grade 23 is Ti-6Al-4V ELI (extra low interstitial), with tighter limits on oxygen and iron for better fracture toughness and ductility. It is specified for implants under ASTM F136 and for cryogenic service.
