Neoprene is polychloroprene (CR), a synthetic rubber with a balanced set of properties: moderate oil resistance, good weather and ozone resistance, flame resistance and toughness. Typical compounds serve from about −40 to 212 °F (−40 to 100 °C) and range from 30 to 90 Shore A. It is used for gaskets, bellows and boots, closed-cell sponge, and fabric-laminated soft goods like sleeves.

EPDM has better weather, ozone, water and heat resistance and costs less. Neoprene adds moderate oil resistance, flame resistance and better bonding to fabric and metal. Choose neoprene when a part sees both oil splash and weather; otherwise EPDM.
Solid and closed-cell neoprene do not absorb water, which is why it is used for wetsuits and gaskets. Open-cell sponge and stitched fabric-laminate seams can wick water unless sealed.
Closed-cell neoprene sponge is foamed polychloroprene, graded by firmness under ASTM D1056. It seals uneven surfaces at low closing force, insulates, and laminates to nylon or polyester fabric for sleeves and padding.
