STEP

STEP is a neutral 3D CAD file format defined by ISO 10303, saved as .step or .stp. It carries exact solid geometry that any CAD, CAM, or quoting system can read, which makes it the preferred file for RFQs, tooling design, and machining.

STL

STL is a 3D file format that describes a part surface as a mesh of triangles. It is the standard input for 3D printing, but it approximates curves and carries no exact geometry, so it cannot support accurate machining or tooling quotes. Send STEP for those.

DXF

DXF is the Drawing Exchange Format, an open 2D CAD file format created by Autodesk. It is the standard input for laser cutting, waterjet, and punching flat patterns. A DXF carries geometry but usually not tolerances, material, or thickness, so it should travel with a drawing.
