Bridge tooling is lower-cost, faster tooling, often aluminum or unhardened P20 steel molds and soft dies, used to make production-intent parts while hardened production tooling is built. It covers pilot builds, launches, and early sales at volumes from hundreds to tens of thousands of parts.
Also called Prototype tooling, Soft tooling
Aluminum injection molds typically ship in 3–6 weeks versus 8–14 weeks for hardened steel. Tool life is shorter, and fine features and shutoffs wear faster, so bridge tools make sense when time to market or design uncertainty outweighs piece price.
